Bloomington, Ill. – The Bloomington Edge won a shoot out against Western Michigan on Saturday night outscoring the Ironmen 68-67. It was the Edge’s special teams that made the difference in the third game between these two teams this season. Defensive back Mitch Moore returned two kicks for touchdowns, and defensive end Kyle Jenkins blocked an extra point in the final minute of the game.

Bloomington started the evening with the #1 scoring defense in the CIF holding opponents to 38 points per game, but Western Michigan was able to find the end zone with regularity. Running back Kory Ringer was all but unstoppable as he scored seven times in the game. Every time the Ironmen scored, however, the Edge had an answer.

Down 11 point in the second half, Moore ran back his second kick return for a touchdown. Combined with a two point conversion, the lead was cut to 3. The defense got a stop on the next possession which gave Bloomington the ball and an opportunity to take the lead. Quarterback Caleb Hoolbrook connected with J.J. Hayes for the duos second scoring hook up of the night putting the Edge up four.

Coach Ismail’s defense got another big stop on the next possession. Although Holbrook and the offense were unable to punch the ball in from inside the 10, kicker Cody Barber drilled a 15 yard field goal extending the Edge’s lead to 7. Western Michigan scored on their next possession, but the extra point was blocked by Jenkins sealing the Edge’s 68-67 victory.

Bloomington moves to 6-3 on the season holding on to second place in the CIF North. The top four teams in each division qualify for the playoffs with the top two teams hosting home playoffs games. The Edge has a bye next week before returning home for an afternoon game against the Salina Liberty on May 20th at 1pm.
