Salina Liberty Football Announces Kalamie Matthews Returns to Offensive Line

One of the top linemen in the Champions Indoor Football League will be putting on the Salina Liberty jersey once again.

Kalamie Matthews, a two-time All-CIF offensive lineman, has signed to play for the Liberty in 2019. It will mark the second season in Salina for the 6-foot-3, 315-pound Matthews, who played his college ball at Murray State.

Matthews was a first-team all-conference player at offensive guard last season as the Liberty produced a 10-4 record. He was also a first-team selection in 2017 with the now defunct Dodge City Law. Prior to that, he played a season with the Washinton Valor in the Arena Football League.

Matthews was born in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, but gew up in Lithona, Ga., and played basketball through his junior year in high school before trying football. He attended Hutchinson Community College for one year, but didn't play football. He then transferred to Murray State University, where he played for three seasons.

At Murray State, Matthews started six games at defensive tackle his first year and was moved to offensive tackle, where he started every game for the next two seasons.

Matthews was invited to the Seattle Seahawks' mini-camp in 2015 and was eventually put on the team's reserve list. He currently works as an assistant coach and teaching assistant at Graves County (Ky.) High School.

The Liberty open their fourth season on March 16 with a preseason game against the Topeka Flight at Tony's Pizza Events Center, followed by a regular season opener at Amarillo on March 23.

Salina will be part of the CIF's Northern Conference with the Wichita Force, Sioux City Bandits and Omaha Beef. The Southern Conference features the Amarillo Venom, Oklahoma Flying Aces, Duke City Gladiators and Texas Revolution. The Liberty will play a 12-game regular season schedule in 2019.
